Mental Health Awareness Week 2020
18th May 2020
Mental health problems can affect anyone, at any time. We believe that mental health is everyone’s business so we are joining the Mental Health Foundation by promoting Mental Health Awareness Week.
The theme for this year is ‘kindness’. One thing that we have seen all over the world is that kindness is prevailing in uncertain times.
We have learnt that amid the fear, there is also community, support and hope.
The added benefit of helping others is that it is good for our own mental health and wellbeing. It can help reduce stress and improve your emotional wellbeing.
Kindness and Mental Health
Kindness is defined by doing something towards yourself and others, motivated by genuine desire to make a positive difference. We know from research that kindness and our mental health are deeply connected. The research shows that kindness is an antidote to isolation and creates a sense of belonging. It helps reduce stress, brings a fresh perspective and deepens friendships. Kindness to ourselves can prevent shame from corroding our sense of identity and help boost our self-esteem. Kindness can even improve feelings of confidence and optimism.
We want to support the Mental Health Foundation in using Mental Health Awareness week to support each other to take that brave step and harness the benefits for both everyone.
Access Training provides support and resources to learners and employers to support better mental health and our trained safeguarding staff are on hand when people need that bit of extra help to get them through a difficult time.
Our Citizenship Calendar concentrates on different topics each month, including mental health, to raise awareness of its importance.
