Learner case study: Carly Fisher
How my traineeship got me work ready
A traineeship is the perfect way for young candidates to get a taste of on-the-job learning. Here Carla Fisher, who gained permanent employment as a result, charts how a traineeship set her firmly on her career path.
“I had just finished my first year of A-levels when I came across the Access Training’s Traineeship Programme at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. Even though I had really enjoyed school up until that point, I didn’t like the exam element of A-levels.
The traineeship, which took place over the six weeks of the Summer holidays in 2015, offered the perfect taster for a different style of learning. It gave me valuable experience in both Healthcare and Administration.
After a successful presentation and interview with managers at the end of my 100-hour training, I was delighted to be offered two Level 2 Business Administration Apprenticeship placements; one in Finance and one in the L&O Department. I chose the latter, said Goodbye to my A-Levels, and became the main Help Desk Advisor with the city campus.
In the same year, I was asked to support Access Training in a presentation to a national FTSE 100 company, who were looking to pilot a Traineeship Programme.
It gave me the opportunity to show how I had gained in confidence; enhanced my work readiness skills; and, importantly, how my Traineeship Programme allowed me to take part in different job shadowing opportunities.
Permanent Role
Part-way through my apprenticeship, I secured a permanent job at the Nottingham Breast Institute and went on to study for an advanced Level 3 apprenticeship.
I was at the Institute for four years, even stepping up to a Band 4 coordinator role to cover maternity leave.
When that maternity cover came to an end, I decided to put my administration skills to good use in an entirely different environment and joined as Receptionist at Lawrence Veterinary Centre in Nottingham.
For any young person who is not sure that A-levels is right for them, I would highly recommend a traineeship. It’s a perfect way to get first-hand experience of a particular working environment and job role before making the commitment to an apprenticeship course. What really appealed to me about both the traineeship and apprenticeship is that you are never learning for the sake of learning; it always directly relates to your day-to-day work.
This style of learning in context really suited me as it helped me deliver a much better understanding of what I was studying.
Even though it’s nearly two years since I completed my apprenticeship, I have really fond memories of my time at Access Training. I found everyone I dealt with to be highly supportive; always on hand to give advice and quick to respond if I needed a steer on supporting evidence. I was delighted too to have been recognised as a commended learner in the Business Administration Apprentice of the Year category of the 2019 Access Awards.
I now own a house and a dog, and have a very clear idea of the work I enjoy. I have my traineeship to thank for setting me on that path!”
