Learner case study: Ashley Price

A career in Construction made possible through the CSCS Card Course
To be accepted for a career or an apprenticeship in Construction, a candidate needs the right certificates and training. Here Ashley Price, describes how Access Training’s CSCS Card course propelled him from unemployment to a permanent position in the Construction industry.

“I’ve been interested in a career in Construction for some time. It’s work that really appeals to me as it’s physical, interesting, and about as far away from a classroom as you can imagine! There was just one sticking point – I didn’t have the certificates needed to gain entry on to a Construction site.

I was told about Access Training’s CSCS Card course.

As it was only a two-week course, it seemed a really quick and effective way in which to get the training I needed. The course allowed me to complete the Employability Certificate, a Health and Safety Certificate, and finally my CSCS test. Because I passed, Access Training paid for my CSCS card.

The course was really easy to access, and the trainers themselves were brilliant and did everything they could to help. For me, what set it apart from a standard (and, let’s be honest) boring classroom lesson was that the trainers were really happy to share their own life experiences. Kathryn Harrold, my Employability Trainer, gave a really honest account of being on both sides of the interview process, as an interviewer and interviewee, and how to deal with negative feedback to become more successful next time round. Paul Johnston, Lead Construction IQA / Trainer, provided examples of real-life incidents and accidents that have happened throughout his years in the construction industry. Quite often, the examples were triggered by a question from one of the trainees, so it seemed a really natural way to learn. It also made the information so much easier to retain.

Now I have my CSCS card, I am so much more attractive to employers, and I’m really pleased that I’ve already been accepted for my first job.

For anyone needing a career start or looking for a career change, I would thoroughly recommend Access Training. Because of this course, I can now access building sites which has made a massive boost to what I can earn and, ultimately, my quality of life. A massive thank you to everyone involved!”
