Government announces mandatory housing qualification for social housing
6th March 2023
New Government legislation will make a professional Housing qualification mandatory for all senior managers and executives in the social housing sector.
The announcement on the amended Social Housing (Regulation) Bill was made on 26 February by Housing Minister, Michael Gove. It is estimated to affect some 25,000 social housing managers across the UK. Senior housing managers will be expected to hold an Ofqual regulated Housing Management qualification equivalent to Level 4, and senior housing executives a Level 5 Certificate or Diploma in Housing.
In a related announcement, the Chartered Institute of Housing (CiH) confirmed that Access Training (East Midlands) Ltd is one of only 16 study centres across the UK accredited to offer the Level 4 qualification, and one of only eight accredited to offer Level 5.
This qualification provides the skills and knowledge needed to perform in a senior management role. It offers a blended approach of remote workshops and one-to-one tutorials, and covers all relevant areas of housing policy and practice, and to a recognised professional standard. The duration of the course is 8-10 months.
Corrina Hembury, Managing Director of Access Training, said,
“As an organisation co-owned by two housing associations – Futures Housing Group and Nottingham Community Housing Association – Access Training has an excellent understanding of the needs of the Housing sector and, as importantly, its tenants.
“Over the last four years, we’ve helped over 450 individuals gain the qualifications needed to deliver the best of Housing services. It’s so important that all within the sector who are responsible for the safety and welfare of residents hold the relevant qualifications and, at the same time, are held to account. It really is a key way in which standards will be raised.
“We are currently in the process of scaling up our team to meet what will be an unprecedented demand. For anyone working in the Housing sector who wishes to learn more about how it will impact them, I would urge them to contact the Engagement team here at Access so we can talk you through the options of support.”
There are a range of roles which fall under the umbrella term ‘senior housing manager’, from neighbourhood housing manager to property manager and resident involvement manager. Senior housing executives are considered to be any employee or officer who is part of the senior management team of a registered provider and who has responsibility for the day-to-day management of service provision.
