The Childcare courses are for people who want to work with children and young people. A typical childcare setting will be a nursery, preschool or playgroup. A typical role will be an early years worker, care worker or nursery nurse.
The roles will usually involve duties like supporting children’s learning and development through play and communication. It will also involve helping with activities such as snack time, story time and outside play.

Childcare Level 1
Is it for me? This is an introduction in caring for children and will help develop skills, confidence and knowledge needed to care for children whilst gaining a qualification. You will need to have a caring nature, positive attitude and be willing to work towards a higher level in maths and English (if required.) What does the course involve? You will attend classes for 3 days a week to study childcare theory, and maths and English (if required). During the course, you will also have the opportunity to attend a suitable work placement, depending upon your attitude and performance. Practical activities and experiences include: You will be introduced to a variety of topics including communication, craft activities, self development, healthy living and planning for the physical and emotional needs of children. What can I progress onto? You can progress onto Childcare Level 2. |
Childcare Level 2
Is it for me? If you want to work with children and want to achieve a qualification while gaining valuable work experience then this will be a suitable course for you. We are looking for learners who have a positive, approachable nature, who are flexible and organised. You need to be willing to work towards a higher level in maths and English (if required) and undergo a DBS check. What does the course involve? You will attend classes for 2 days a week to study childcare theory, and maths and English (if required). During the course, you must also attend a suitable work placement. Practical activities and experiences include: You will develop your skills in aspects such as health, safety and hygiene and child development. You will also need to gain practical experience working with children aged 0-5 in a childcare setting and will complete tasks such as child observations, play activities and development and learning. What can I progress onto? You can progress onto an Advanced Apprenticeship or continue onto Childcare Level 3. |

- attendance at Access Training’s Nottingham learning centre;
- approximately 19 hours per week over three days;
- two days vocational training and one day of Maths and English each week.
Childcare Level 2 students are required to have a placement (supported by Access Training).
