These courses are perfect for anyone wishing to work with animals. Generally, work in this industry deals with the health, welfare, handling and supervision of animals – whether that’s working in a zoo or wildlife park, or for the RSPCA. It’s a dedicated profession as animals need to be looked after 365 days a year. You could learn about health checking, basic animal training, transporting animals, feeding, watering and exercising animals, advising customers and owners, or maintaining a clean and safe working environment.

Is it for me?
If you love animals and would like to work with them and learn all basics aspects of caring for them, then this could be the course for you.
What does the course involve?
During the course, you will achieve the Award or Certificate in Practical Small Animal Care Skills. You will also gain employability skills and when ready will attend work placement within the animal care industry. This will enable you to put what you’ve learnt into practice in a real life environment. As part of the course, you will also study maths and English (if required).
Practical activities and experiences include:
You will develop your knowledge and skills in animal husbandry, including: feeding, cleaning, grooming, giving medication and health checks.
You will also benefit from visits to animal care establishments to look at various animal care career opportunities and you will attend a suitable work experience placement.
What can I progress onto?
You can progress onto Higher Education to undertake a Level 3 Qualification or you may wish to start an Apprenticeship within the animal care industry.
How long are the courses?
Most of the full-time courses last one academic year and take place during term time only.

- attendance at Access Training’s Nottingham learning centre;
- approximately 19 hours per week over three days;
- two days vocational training and one day of Maths and English each week.
Animal Care students get the opportunity to attend a farm once every two weeks.
