Ta’naeyah’s learning journey in construction
As part of Women in Construction Week, we’re proud to spotlight one of our female learners who is breaking barriers and building her future in a traditionally male‑dominated industry. Ta’naeyah is currently on Access Training’s Full-Time Level 1 Construction Programme. Her determination, creativity, and passion for hands‑on work are already paving the way for a bright future. Choosing a different path For Ta’naeyah, the decision to pursue construction was clear. “As a hands-on person, I prefer a manual career rather than being stuck behind a desk,” she explained. The appeal of practical, active work inspired her to explore a career where she could build, create, and see real results from her skills. She first heard about Access Training through her brother. Seeing his positive experience gave her the motivation to take the first step and enrol herself. Discovering strengths through creativity While the course covers a range of construction skills, two areas have stood out as her favourites: “Tiling and painting and decorating – they allow me to be more creative.” These new skills have given her space to express creativity while developing practical trade skills. Support that makes a difference A supportive learning environment has played an important role in her journey. Ta’naeyah shared that the 1:1 support, small groups and approachable tutors have helped her grow in confidence and stay motivated. She also isn’t alone, there are now more women joining the construction programme. A message to future women in construction Her advice to other women or girls considering a construction career is, “Go for it – don’t be afraid of male dominance. Be yourself. Nobody judges you.” Her words capture the spirit of Women in Construction Week: empowering women to step forward, challenge stereotypes, and claim their place in the industry. Looking ahead With big ambitions and growing skills, Ta’naeyah’s future is bright. Her journey is only just beginning, but her determination and passion already embody the strength, resilience, and creativity that women bring to construction.
