Advancing through Access Training
Housing and Property Management Level 3
My journey in housing began in 2017 when I successfully applied for the role of Estate Assistant at NCHA. This was a career change from working in care and support, but I had the skills for this career shift. Housing appealed to me because of its variety—no two days are the same, and the role always keeps me on my toes.
In the role, I wanted to enhance my career development and deepen my understanding of the housing sector. Pursuing a formal qualification felt like the right step, and the apprenticeship in Housing and Property Management (level 3) stood out as a great opportunity.
The apprenticeship was structured in a way that fit seamlessly into my work schedule. It only required a morning each week or fortnight, with some additional time for research and assignments. The content was incredibly engaging, covering the history of social housing and its processes, which I could apply directly to my day-to-day responsibilities. Balancing work and study were made possible by the support of my team, who often helped manage my workload or provided feedback on my assignments and presentations.
Of course, there were challenges. Returning to formal study after many years meant I had to get to grips with academic referencing and formatting, which was a steep learning curve. Despite these hurdles, the experience boosted my confidence. I’ve always been someone who questions “why,” and the course gave me the answers I needed to understand housing processes and their importance.
The support I received from others played a huge part in my success. My manager, helped with accessing systems, explaining processes, and providing constructive feedback during tutor meetings. My tutor, Amada, was fantastic, her flexibility and knowledge of NCHA ensured I stayed on track. She was always there to check in, address any challenges, and push me toward success.
Completing the apprenticeship was a proud moment, especially as it reignited my love for learning and inspired me to pursue further qualifications. Looking ahead, I aspire to develop my career in Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB), using the knowledge and skills I’ve gained to make a meaningful impact. I’m currently halfway through a level 4 ASB and Community Safety apprenticeship and plan to begin the level 5 course shortly after. My goal is to grow into a role where I can contribute at a higher level.
For anyone considering further study, I recommend it. It not only opens doors for career advancement but also fosters personal growth and confidence. The apprenticeship was particularly valuable because it allowed me to learn on the job, applying my knowledge in real-time. It’s been a transformative experience, and I’m excited to see where it leads.
