Rosie’s apprenticeship journey
Property Maintenance Operative Level 2
When Rosie set her sights on a career change, she wanted a role that combined practical skills with a chance to make a real impact. Through the Property Maintenance Operative apprenticeship with Access Training, she found the perfect fit — working with Nottingham Community Housing Association (NCHA) to help maintain safe, comfortable homes for residents across the region.
Building a future in housing
Rosie was drawn to the apprenticeship route because it offered hands-on learning from experienced tradespeople. “I’ve always admired people working in trades, and apprenticeships are an excellent opportunity to get real-time experience,” she said. Knowing NCHA’s reputation for diversity and inclusion gave her the confidence to pursue her passion. “I wanted to learn with a reputable organisation so I’d feel supported, especially as a woman going into construction. NCHA’s commitment to equality, with 50% of their board being female, really stood out to me.”
Making a difference with NCHA
Working with NCHA has given Rosie the chance to directly contribute to improving homes and communities. From learning essential maintenance skills to joining the Green Leaders group to build hedgehog houses and enhance green spaces, she’s been immersed in the housing sector’s broader mission of creating sustainable, welcoming environments for tenants. “I’ve had so many opportunities to train and learn new skills that will help me be the best tradesperson I can be,” Rosie said.
Her mentor, Angela, highlighted Rosie’s enthusiasm: “Rosie fully embraces our values and is always polite, resourceful, and committed. She’s a joy to have on the multi-trade cohort.”

Growing through Apprenticeships
Rosie’s apprenticeship has helped her develop confidence, teamwork skills, and a keen interest in joinery. Adam Cooper, Trainer Assessor at Access Training, praised her progress: “Rosie is doing really well — she’s confident in the classroom, asks questions, and supports her teammates.”
Thanks to her determination, and the hands-on experience at NCHA, Rosie is well on her way to a rewarding career in housing, helping to maintain and improve homes for communities across the East Midlands.
