There is ability in every disability: Owen Hayes’ apprenticeship journey

Here at Access Training, we believe in unlocking potential, regardless of the challenges life throws our way. Over the years, we’ve proudly supported hundreds of apprentices in achieving their Customer Service qualifications, and one story stands out as a true inspiration – that of Owen Hayes.

A journey of determination and success

Owen, now 21, began his journey with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) through Project Search, a supported internship program for young people with learning difficulties. This was just the first step in what would become a remarkable success story.

In May 2023, Owen enrolled in the Customer Service Practitioner Level 2 Apprenticeship with the support of NUH and his Access Training Trainer Assessor. Despite facing significant challenges due to dyslexia and a severe hearing impairment, Owen demonstrated incredible determination and commitment throughout his apprenticeship.

Breaking barriers with support and hard work

With guidance from his employer and Access Training, Owen overcame these barriers to excel in his role. His hard work and perseverance paid off when he achieved a Distinction grade at his End Point Assessment – a testament to his dedication and the power of supportive learning environments.

During his apprenticeship, Owen also took on an ambassador role for apprenticeships within NUH, inspiring others with his story and encouraging them to pursue their goals.

From apprentice to full-time employee

Owen’s journey didn’t stop with achieving his apprenticeship. He has since secured full-time employment with NUH, where he continues to thrive in his role. His story highlights not only the opportunities that apprenticeships can provide but also the strength and ability that can shine through any challenge.

Owen shared his advice for others considering an apprenticeship:

“Be yourself, respect others, and work hard. There is ability in every disability!”

Why apprenticeships matter

Owen’s story reflects the life-changing impact that apprenticeships can have, especially when coupled with the right support and determination. At Access Training, we’re proud to be part of such inspiring journeys, helping individuals achieve their goals and gain valuable qualifications that open doors to bright futures.

If Owen’s story has inspired you, why not explore how an apprenticeship could shape your future? Whether you’re starting your career or looking for a fresh opportunity, we’re here to support you every step of the way.
