My journey into housing and professional development

Housing and Property Management Level 3

When I started working at NCHA in 2020, I had no prior experience in housing. My role within Property Services sparked my curiosity about the broader aspects of the sector. I wanted to expand my knowledge to take a more holistic approach to my work, understanding how all areas of housing come together to support our customers. This drive led me to pursue an apprenticeship in Housing and Property Management, which turned out to be one of the most rewarding decisions in my career so far.

The apprenticeship stands out for its practicality, it’s clear that the course is designed by industry experts with real-world experience. It’s an excellent choice for anyone looking to grow in housing. I’m passionate about making a difference in housing and this course has given me the tools to do just that.

The learning journey

Balancing work and study was no small feat, but with my manager’s support, I was able to dedicate one day a week exclusively to my coursework. Communication was key during busier periods at work or when unexpected challenges arose, we adjusted my schedule to ensure I stayed on track.

Through this course, I gained an in-depth understanding of housing, from its historical roots to the current housing crisis. I’ve learned about tenancy types, antisocial behaviour (ASB), homelessness prevention, and the link between housing design and mental/physical health. This knowledge has transformed how I approach my work in property services. I now see the connection of repairs, ASB, rent arrears, and customer wellbeing. For instance, customers struggling with arrears might hesitate to report repairs, creating further challenges.

The course has also boosted my confidence. With a well-rounded understanding of housing, I approach customer interactions with more empathy and insight, appreciating the challenges they face.

The support I received from our learning and development team was invaluable. Access Training’s lesson content was practical and engaging, and collaborating with peers from other housing providers offered fresh perspectives.

Reflections and future goals

Looking back, the knowledge I’ve gained has given me a deeper appreciation for how intertwined housing issues are. This understanding has equipped me to address challenges more effectively in my role. I’m eager to continue growing and contributing to the housing sector, especially as it evolves to meet environmental and social challenges.

To anyone considering further study, my advice is simple: go for it! Age or career stage shouldn’t hold you back. Studying can enhance your confidence, deepen your expertise, and open doors you didn’t even know existed.
