Overcoming challenges and career progression
Colin, 49, works at Clarion Housing Group as a Property Maintenance Operative, where he has been completing his Level 2 apprenticeship alongside his Functional Skills in English at Level 1. His journey has been one of dedication, perseverance, and personal growth, with the support of Access Training.
Already employed at Clarion, Colin was offered the opportunity to undertake the apprenticeship, which has since helped him transition into a new role within the organisation. When he first started, he disclosed that he is severely dyslexic and had not completed any formal English work since leaving school. Writing tasks were particularly challenging for him, so much so that his wife would typically support him.
Despite these challenges, Colin remained committed to his learning. With the additional support of extra sessions tailored to his needs, he worked hard to develop his skills and successfully completed his qualification in English. This is a huge personal achievement and a testament to both Colin’s determination and the support provided by us and his work colleagues.

Reflecting on his journey, Colin said:
“This course has been instrumental in supporting me to make my move to my new role with Clarion. I have learnt many new skills that I can use day-to-day to make a difference to the local community. I have also gained a recognised qualification in English, which will make everyday living a little easier. I want to say thank you to my manager, Sarah Breeze, for believing in my abilities and for giving me the chance to complete this course while continuing my everyday job.”
Colin’s story highlights the impact of apprenticeships in not only developing technical skills but also in providing the confidence and qualifications needed to progress in both work and life.
At Access Training, we are proud to have supported Colin on this journey and look forward to seeing where his new role at Clarion takes him next.
