Strengthening housing practice through CIH Level 5

Building expertise through experience and training
With nearly two decades of experience in the housing sector, Richard Spence had developed a strong understanding of legislation and best practice. Completing the CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing with Access Training further enhanced this knowledge, bringing fresh insight, renewed confidence, and meaningful improvements to his organisation.

“I thought I knew all the legislation, but the course completely changed my perspective.”

Driving better practice across the organisation
The CIH Level 5 Diploma in Housing has had a significant impact on how Richard and his colleagues approach housing management. It has introduced new ways of thinking around compliance and competency frameworks, strengthened their understanding of regulatory expectations, and encouraged reflection and continuous improvement across the organisation.

“It gave me a lot to reflect on and helped us improve our practices. We were doing well, but now we’re doing it better.”

Access Training’s delivery model, combining expert tutors with sector-relevant content, ensured the learning was both practical and immediately applicable.

Flexible learning that works
Richard explains: “Training is designed to fit around the realities of a busy residential recovery environment. With structured sessions and ongoing tutor support, I was able to balance learning alongside my day-to-day responsibilities. The tutors were knowledgeable and supportive, and the content was aligned with real-world challenges. I also really valued learning alongside peers from across the sector in an open cohort.”

Preparing for the future
Carpenters Arms has introduced new ways of thinking around compliance, competency frameworks and regulatory standards. They continue to invest in training, with plans to achieve CIH Level 4 across the management team, support deputy managers to gain ILM Level 2 qualifications, and explore additional programmes to further enhance skills and digital capability. This forward-thinking approach ensures the organisation remains aligned with sector expectations while continuing to deliver high-quality support.

A trusted training partner
For Richard, the value of Access Training lies in their tailored approach and genuine partnership.

“They’ve taken the time to understand us and shape training around what we need, both for our staff and our residents.”

Completing the CIH Level 5 Diploma has not only enhanced Richard’s professional knowledge but has also helped strengthen standards, improve outcomes, and future-proof the organisation.
“It’s absolutely worth the investment, in time and in development. It’s helped prepare us to be ahead of the curve.”
