Case Study
Callum Griffiths
Work It Out Programme
Ellis Guilford School
September 2008 to June 2009
Callum
was referred to the programme because he was behaving badly
at school, messing around and not listening to teachers.
The school was very concerned that he was in danger of
leaving with very few qualifications and with low self
esteem.

At his
Initial Assessment, Callum said that he loved animals and
might want to work with them when he left school. He also
admitted that he was easily distracted and that he might
need help with written tasks.
Despite his anxiety, Callum was a model pupil during
Induction where his behaviour and attitude were impeccable
and we were therefore confident to arrange a placement for
him at The Cat’s Protection in Bulwell.
Here
he has absolutely blossomed and quickly became part of the
team, even being included in their Development Team Building
Day at Sherwood Pines. Manager Kevin Owen said “Callum has
been a good lad. He has come when he was supposed to, shown
initiative and asked for jobs when he has finished others.”
Callum
himself says that he has learnt a huge amount whilst he has
been on placement, including the importance of germ
protection and the danger of cross infection, learning how
to transport cats safely, the different food requirements
and the importance of socialising with caged animals. He
thinks he has changed a lot, that he is a better listener
and has matured through mixing with older people. He found
the Induction useful in helping him produce a CV and
generally making him feel more confident before he went out
into the workplace.
Chris
Eaton of Ellis Guilford School commented “We wanted a
provision for Callum that allowed him to achieve, build his
self-esteem and give him progression at post 16. We are
really pleased with the progress Callum has made and his
plans for the future”
Callum
is on track to achieve his NOCN Step Up Award having
completed the Preparation for Work and Work Based Placement
units. He has enrolled with us for a Programme Led
Apprenticeship in Animal Care starting in July.
