9th December 2011 - Shirebrook schools create new teaching apprenticeship roles
Access Training has apprenticeship vacancies for teaching assistants as part of its work with schools in Shirebrook. The Nottingham-based training company is working in partnership with The Park School Federation - a cluster of schools within the Shirebrook area - which is now looking for enthusiastic and hard working apprentice teaching assistants to work in schools in the area. “The project is still in its infancy but nine young people have successfully gained employmen as an apprentice all studying towards the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools QCF qualification at level 2” said an Access Training spokesman. “A high percentage of these were recruited within the Shirebrook area and, due to the project’s success, the federation has decided to offer a further five apprenticeship places to strengthen the numbers to 14 in total. We understand that the delivery of our services needs to be tailored to suit the organisations needs which cause minimal disruption. We pride ourselves on the flexibility of our services and are committed to maximising learner achievement and meeting employers’ needs.” The federation is made up of The Park Junior School and The Park Infant and Nursery School and headteacher Steve Hewitt-Richards says he is looking for hard working people to continue their learning journey in the area. “My team and I believe strongly in providing career opportunities for people who want to make a difference” he said. “We strive to provide the best possible education we can for our children and we would like to invite you to be part of this supportive and visionary team.” Each apprentice will have a programme of study within the classroom, be given their own laptop, own resource room with relevant study materials available to them. “If you were a previous ‘super student’ then I would like to hear from you, too,” added Mr Hewitt-Richards. Anyone interested in the scheme should contact Access Training on 0115 9587257 or email info@atem.co.uk.

Added 20th May 2011 - Access Training hosts its largest ever Celebration Event
WELL over 500 people celebrated success in work-based learning at the Albert Hall, Nottingham on May 19th many of whom have overcome personal obstacles in their journey to achievement. The annual Access Training Celebration Event represents the culmination of much hard work and personal sacrifice for many of the 550 learners who have achieved qualifications with the company in the last year. The pinnacle of the evening was the presentation of the Access Training Star Awards to those learners and employers who had "gone the extra mile" the audience was treated to a video clip of the winners speaking about their individual achievements. The Employer Award, went to trent barton for its outstanding commitment to the training and development of its staff. The bus company has a long term relationship with Access Training and has recently introduced an apprenticeship scheme, the trent barton Diploma, with the aim of building on its success. The Foundation Learning Award, sponsored by the Nottingham Journal, went to 17 yr old Anthony Peters of Bulwell currently on a retail course with Access Training. Anthony left school lacking in confidence and really scared of trying new things. Attending a work placement was completely out of his comfort zone but he was nominated for the incredible progress he has made in overcoming this. The Apprenticeship Award, sponsored by Printing.com, was awarded to NHS Apprentice, Lucy Davis, for “demonstrating how effective learning can be” when all opportunities are seized with both hands. Lucy had started an A Level course but felt academic learning was not for her. She was put forward for the NHS apprenticeship by Access Training and has been so successful that she has now secured a permanent position as a Children’s Worker in a Sure Start centre. Talking of the "transformation" this has made to her life, Lucy says that she wakes up "each morning with a smile on my face, wanting to get up and go to work." A big thank you to all that attended the evening at Albert Hall, the celebration event was a huge success! Sue Stronach from the NHS had this to say: "It was an absolutely fantastic night and I had tears in my eyes when the first few learners got their certificates. It was like a big graduation ceremony and I think Access should get a great deal of satisfaction for their dedication to their learners. It was also great to see that Karen Murphy-Ryan from NAS tool the time to attend. It ran really smoothly (well from my side of things) and I think you all deserve a pat on the back for the work you put in!!" Winners of the star awards at the celebration evening:
Foundation Learning Star Award Winner Anthony Peters receiving the award from Phil Cound, Nottingham Journal Foundation Learning Winner: Apprenticeship Star Award Winner Lucy Davis receiving the award from Phil Huges, Printing.com Apprenticeship Winner:

22nd March 2011 - Waving The
Wand for Red Nose Day![]() Cakes were baked, cars were washed, money was coaxed out of pockets and presiding over it all was Access Training’s very own “fairy” complete with wand. Yes, this was Red Nose Day and as usual it was a real team effort with staff and learners joining in the fun. Access Training’s own new Apprentices (A2C) led the day and, according to Charlie Smith, made about 150 cakes some of which they sold to a visitor who just happened to be sitting in Reception. How’s that for enterprise? Tracy Byrne was waiting whilst her daughter was having assessment testing and decided to buy a plateful of the delicious looking cakes to treat customers at her pub, the Royal Oak at Westwood. Encouraged by the fairy (AKA Ian Cohen, Company Secretary), learners rolled their sleeves up and got stuck in washing staff cars. Shannon Varney, also on the A2C course said, “It’s been fun and exciting and even though it’s cold it’s worth it” whilst Tanya Daykin agreed, “Everyone is interacting. The groups are all working together to raise money”. The Foundation Learners organised a “Deal or No Deal” session based on the popular TV programme inviting staff to join them, something our staff are always keen to do. In all a total of £125 was raised and whilst this did not break any records for us, the day was much more about team spirit, groups bonding, thinking of others and hoping that the fairy’s wand might work some magic!
The smiles were free but the cakes were charged for!

15th February 2011 - Who says you shouldn’t work
with animals and children?
It was difficult to decide who were the stars of the show at the workshop run jointly by Access Training and Foxwood School at the annual 14-19 Conference held at the East Midlands Conference Centre in February: rabbits or learners? The theme of the workshop was the importance and value of collaboration in Foundation Learning. Delegates were impressed by a powerpoint presentation put together by Russell Butcher of Foxwood School, fresh from his success as the winner of the pre-16 Nottinghamshire Training Network award. Judith Wright of Access Training explained how the previous success of pupils from Special Schools on the Animal Care course had led to the provision growing to the current 5 courses offered to pupils from 8 different schools across Nottinghamshire. Lindsey Norton from Foxwood then gave specific examples of how the collaboration with Access Training enhances the Foundation Learning curriculum at Foxwood, often enabling learners to achieve at a higher level than in other areas. But the stars of the show were undoubtedly the learners and rabbits (courtesy of Stonebridge City Farm), ably coached by Jackie Loftus. In pairs, the learners demonstrated how to carry out Health Checks on the obliging rabbits and then answered questions from the delegates as to what they had gained from the course so far. The rabbits seemed to take this all in their stride (or is it hop?), and were no doubt relieved by the last slide of the presentation pictured below.

9th February 2011 - ANOTHER WINNER FOR ACCESS
TRAINING
For the second time in three years, Access Training’s nomination in the pre-16 Learner of the Year Award at the annual NTN ceremony took the top prize. Russell Butcher, a pupil of Foxwood Special School, and currently acting as a learning mentor at a course run by Access Training at Stonebridge City Farm on a Friday morning, was nominated for the way his life had been turned around through working with animals. After not attending school for several years and finding life very difficult, Russell was put forward for the course by his Connexions advisor because of his love of animals. Regular attendance and the support of Access Training staff, Sally Small and Jackie Loftus, proved motivational for Russell and he achieved an NVQ Level 1 in the summer of 2010. Whilst on the course, he transferred to Foxwood School, made new friends and was soon attending school full time. He is the first to admit that he has “grown in confidence”, whilst Lindsey Norton, Deputy Head of Foxwood who was there on the night proudly watching his success, said “the course has changed both Russell’s home and school life”.

9th February 2011 - Celebrating Apprenticeship
Week Raising the blood pressure? As it’s National Apprenticeship Week, Access Training Director, Ian Cohen, was back to the workplace again following his successful foray last year into the world of tiny tots at a Day Nursery. This year he was keen to experience life as a Clinical Apprentice with the NHS so shadowed Jordan McKenzie who has been on the programme for almost a year now. Jordan joined Access Training on a Programme Led Apprenticeship scheme but was put forward for the NHS position in Adult Care and has thrived on all the opportunities offered to her. She works across several NHS sites supporting District Nurses, visiting the elderly, as a phlebotomist and taking blood pressure. Indeed, so skilled has she become in the latter that she was able to instruct Ian in how to do this, as can be seen below and we are pleased that the patient lived to tell the tale!
Access Training recently secured a brand new contract with the Nottingham University Hospitals Trust to recruit 15 further Clinical Apprentices to start in March. As part of the bidding process, Jordan was asked to talk about her own experiences as an apprentice. She is clearly becoming adept at this, as this week she has also addressed a meeting of NHS Line Managers at the Clifton Cornerstone Health Centre talking about the training, the level of support she receives and generally “telling it as it is” to help the NHS in its commitment to recruit more apprentices. This new contract builds on the recent recruitment of 18 NHS apprentices for Sure Start and Children’s and Adult Clinical positions. They will all be trained by Access Training and we are delighted that both Jordan and the NHS were recognised at the recent Nottinghamshire Training Network Annual Awards Ceremony: The NHS were voted Employer of the Year for Nottinghamshire whilst Jordan was runner up in the Apprentice of the Year category. After spending time with Jordan, Ian commented, “I found it all fascinating and was very impressed by Jordan’s enthusiasm and care, but I think I’ll stick to my day job!”

8th February 2011 - Who says men don’t do yoga?
As part of January’s Healthy Living Month activities, learners at both Cawley House and our new Derby premises were offered the chance to take part in yoga sessions. Judith Wright, normally better known for her work with schools, ran several sessions showing learners a basic warm up routine and several exercises to promote flexibility, relieve tension and promote a feeling of well-being. The sessions were very well received, and we were particularly delighted that all of the Derby learners (all male) took part, as can be seen in the picture below. The Healthy Living Month also included a visit from a guest speaker from the charity, “Send A Cow” who showed how, by sending a cow to an African village, the health and economic well-being of that village benefitted enormously.
Part of a yoga balance flow, with Judith demonstrating and Lesley Oldershaw, Foundation Programmes Manager, and Richard Sisson, Brickwork Tutor, joining in with Derby learners.

October 2010 -Record Year at What Next Career Event Access Training was kept really busy at this year’s “What Next” event at the Harvey Hadden Stadium by record numbers of visitors to our stand. The annual career event is held over 2 days and evenings and all current Year 11 pupils attending schools in Nottingham and the county are invited. 250 young people completed cards expressing interest in courses run by us and all will be invited to Open Evenings in October and November to help them make up their minds before they leave school in July 2011.Many came with their parents to the evening sessions and there was clearly some concern about the economic situation and how courses could lead to actual jobs. We made good use of the demonstration babies and the firework paintings so that we could engage with learners and their parents and offer them the sort of hands-on, practical approach that Access Training is so good at.As Foundation Learning has replaced the former E2E course, staff explained the new qualification system and the different vocational pathways. All those who expressed an interest in Foundation Learning will be invited to Taster Sessions to be held during the Spring of 2011. |

31st August 2010 - Success
at Stonebridge It was smiles all round at Stonebridge City Farm in July when all 9 learners successfully completed their course with a recognised qualification. Learners from Foxwood and Carlton Digby Special Schools had been attending on a Friday morning for the past year working with the farm animals tutored by our own Sally Small and Jackie Loftus. 7 of the 9 achieved an NVQ Level 1 in Animal Care, whilst the remaining 2 gained an Entry Award in Skills for Working Life. For many of the learners, the qualification was at a higher level than they had previously achieved in school and has done much to boost their confidence and given them a firm foundation from which they can move on. Indeed, so pleased has Foxwood been with the results, that they have commissioned us to deliver the successor qualification, the Certificate in Work Based Animal Care, to a group of their learners starting in September 2010. Pictured below are a selection of learners working at Stonebridge.

5th July
2010 -
It’s
official: Access Training is “Good” according to Ofsted Following a week long inspection at the end of May from the Office for Standards in Education, we are delighted to have been awarded an overall Grade 2 for the effectiveness of our provision. Inspectors were impressed by the current success rates in apprenticeships and Train to Gain programmes which continue to improve and are now “significantly above the national average”. Success is measured both by the achievement of the qualification and the length of time taken to achieve. Employers’ views were canvassed and Ofsted reports that our “staff work well with employers to provide good training at work that meets the needs of learners and employers”.
