Positive Actions for Young People and Access Training

Following on from Access Training's e2e learners' successful participation in Connexions Positive Activities for Young People (PAYP) programme last year, Connexions have again asked if four of Access Training's e2e learners would like to volunteer to be involved in this year's PAYP bids. The learners Teesha Brown, Nathan Clements, Mohammed Ali and Rebecca Sabin all volunteered.

This years PAYP services focus was Friday and Saturday night training that will act as a diversion from involvement in, or the effects of crime.

Organisations have been invited to bid for funds to deliver PAYP programmes in the Nottingham city area during the next 12 months. An adult panel meets to consider the bids, looking at value for money, strengths and experience of delivery staff, quality and variety etc. A panel of Young People which includes our learners also consider the bids. They meet to look at responses to one question of the bid form and give a Young Person’s view on the activities. They then score each bid out of a total of 25 marks. Finally, they report their findings to the adult panel so that funds can be allocated to appropriate PAYP activities.

Following some training Teesha, Nathan, Mohammed and Rebecca spent the day at Denewood Centre on February 16th in what was reported to be an excellent day by both the learners involved and Connexions.

The storming success of this day has led to a further opportunity that the learners are very excited about being involved in. This is an extension of the PAYP in which they will be trained to be PAYP ‘inspectors’ and will plan and conduct an inspection of PAYP Providers. This involves looking at the premises, talking to staff and most importantly talking to other young people who are on the PAYP programme.

Teesha, Nathan, Mohammed and Rebecca will be supported by Connexions throughout the process and 4 inspections will take place in March.

Back To Basics For Grandpa Cohen

As part of a week-long celebration of the talents and skills of all apprentices across the county, Ian Cohen, company secretary of Nottingham-based Access Training is to join Ashfield Plaza Day Nursery as an apprentice in a bid to understand what it’s like to be starting out in a career.

Ian will be joining staff and four Access Training apprentices who already work at the purpose built, 60-place nursery based in the Ashfield Skills Centre at Ashfield School near Mansfield, for the duration of Apprenticeship Week, which runs from 1st to 5th February.

Always keen to promote the benefits of work-based learning, Ian is looking forward to getting stuck in and hopes he offers some basic experience having recently become a Grandpa.  As an ‘apprentice’, he will be shown how to plan play sessions that stimulate learning and encourage children to interact with each other in a positive manner.

Commenting on the challenge ahead, he says: “Although I have two children of my own and am now a Grandpa, methods have changed over the years and I am sure I have a lot to learn.  I have always been really impressed by the amount of learning undertaken in an apprenticeship so just hope I can keep up!”

A whole series of events will be taking place in Nottinghamshire during Apprenticeship Week.  Regional Director of the National Apprenticeship Service (NAS), Karen Woodward says: “The main purpose of the week is to engage employers with Apprenticeship programmes by highlighting the advantages of employing and supporting apprentices in the workplace.

“The week will demonstrate the wide range of Apprenticeships available, including opportunities in the public sector.  The value of Apprentices to organisations is immeasurable and it’s through activities such as this back-to-the-floor experience that employers and senior personnel can really begin to appreciate their talents and the contributions they make.

Access Training (East Midlands) Limited has been successfully providing ‘on the job’ training in the region for over 25 years, providing apprenticeships in Animal Care, Child Care, Health & Social Care, Horticulture, Passenger Transport and for Teaching Assistants.

More information about Apprenticeships is available online at www.apprenticeships.org.uk.

Award Success For Access Training Learners

It was a night to remember on Thursday 28th January when Access Training scooped

2 of the 10 awards at the Nottinghamshire Training Network Annual Awards Event held at the East Midlands Conference Centre.

A captivated audience listened to Jo Salter (“One of the 50 most inspiring women in the world” according to Harpers & Queen magazine) tell of her amazing experiences as the first female RAF Tornado fighter pilot.

Jo’s speech offered encouragement to the audience to overcome obstacles and strive for their personal goals and we hope that this will inspire our 2 winners to do just that.

Aisha Miller (pictured above) won the E2E Award in recognition of all the obstacles she overcame whilst with us.  Living in care meant that Aisha needed extra support from our E2E team and no one was more delighted than tutor, Anne Whitfield, (seen below with Aisha) when the award was announced.  Aisha is now studying Hospitality & Catering at New College Nottingham and dreams of opening her own restaurant.

Ann Mason was the winner in the Train 2 Gain Award.  Ann had been motivated to start her qualification in Health & Social Care whilst she was caring for her daughter.

Her Trainer Assessor, Sacha Lee, was proud to be there on the night to see Ann’s motivation recognised, especially as she knew that Ann’s daughter had tragically died before her Mum had completed the NVQ.  Ann felt that she owed it to her daughter to carry on and to continue the work she does with the Metropolitan Support Trust.

Having been named Runner Up last year as Training Provider of the Year, we were very pleased to have our hard work and quality of support recognised again in being awarded “Highly Commended” in this category.

New Media Suite at Access Training

Access Training is proud to announce its new media suite at Cawley House in Nottingham.

We were successful in November in gaining a £35000 Learning Innovation Grant. This has been used along with further investment from the organisation to equip us with new desktop and laptops computers, smart boards, camcorders and HD video equipment as well as advanced video and audio editing software.

These resources will allow the learners at Access Training to create video case studies on subjects important to them such as homelessness and the prevention of knife crime. The equipment will also be used across all of our vocational areas for the production of educational videos. These videos will be created by the learners for the learners.

Congratulations to Access Training Staff

Five members of staff received an early Christmas present from the Institute for Learning. Claire Lloyd, Craig Birch, Lesley Oldershaw, Lorraine Nicholson and Marilyn Dibble all received their Qualified Teacher Learning & Skills (QTLS) status on Christmas Eve.  To achieve this they all had to put together a portfolio of evidence which was then assessed by the IfL to ensure that they met all the criteria required to achieve their licence to teach. QTLS is the highest status required for their roles and all have done remarkably well to achieve it as 20% of those that applied were refused.

Congratulations to all the staff involved from everyone at Access Training

£2,500 incentive payment to Employers!

Please find below the Governments latest incentive for employing 16 – 17 year old Apprenticeships:

The Government is investing £12.5 million to encourage employers to take on NEW 16 – 17 year old Apprentices.

They aim to support employers to offer new and additional places in support of young people and will be targeting employers who would not otherwise have been in a position to recruit an Apprentice or who are able to offer more Apprenticeship places than they would otherwise have done.

When is it available?

This fund is a short-term, time-limited response and will be available from the New Year for employers who are able to offer a job opportunity to a young person immediately.  Funding will be available from the New Year until April 2010, reinforcing the Governments focus on getting young people into Apprenticeships now.

How will employers be able to get the funding?

Funding will be administered by the National Apprenticeship Service.  Employers will commit to take on a new or additional apprentice in paid employment for the duration of their training.  The Minimum Apprenticeships Wage requirement (£95 per week for 16-18 year olds) will apply.  In return up to 5,000 employers (approx 400 in the East Midlands) will receive a £2,500 bonus and the National Apprenticeship Service will cover the full Apprenticeship training costs, as it would for any 16-18 year old Apprentice.

For further details please contact the National Apprenticeship Service on 08000 150 600

Access Training can support any new Apprentices you recruit through this process!  Please contact Mark Piper at Access Training on 0115 9587257
