What does the course involve?

  • City & Guilds Children’s Care Learning and Development NVQ Level 3
  • Units of the Technical Certificate in Children’s Care Learning & Development which include:
  • Principles and values underpinning work with children and the protection and promotion of children’s rights
  • The provision of healthy, safe and secure environments for children • The provision of effective and high quality childcare environments
  • Promoting child and young person development
  • Promoting learning within early education frameworks
  • Employment Rights & Responsibilities

  • Key Skills level 2 in numeracy and communications*

* If you have achieved a level A-C at GCSE in English and Maths within the last 5 years you may be exempt from Key Skills.

How long does it last?
Between 9 – 18 months

Where will I learn?
After an Induction (approximately 4 weeks) which includes sessions at Access Training, you will have your own trainer assessor and Key Skills tutor if necessary. They will visit you in your work place. You will need to attend further seminars to support your learning such as for Curriculum Planning and How to Plan and Carry out Child Observations.

How will I be assessed?
You will be assessed through work based practical tasks and through a portfolio you will build up proving your underpinning knowledge and experience.

What does this lead to?
You could become a Nursery Nurse, Youth and Community Worker, or take on a management role in a child care setting or open and run your own nursery. You can progress to an NVQ Level 4 and into Higher Education via a Foundation Degree in Early Years, or an Open University Openings Course.
