Animal Care QCF Level 2

Is it for me?
If you want to work or are currently working in the Animal Care Industry, are passionate about animal welfare and are committed to a career in the animal care industry, the animal care apprenticeship is for you. We will teach you about animal welfare – the day to day basics of animal husbandry, disease recognition, nutrition, handling and restraint, grooming and transporting animals. You will work within the Animal Care Industry with livestock such as cats, dogs, rabbits and guinea pigs.

What does the course involve?
The Level 2 Diploma in Work-Based Animal Care includes:

  • Cleaning
  • Feeding
  • Giving medication
  • Handling and restraining
  • Exercising
  • Transporting

All of these units are covered with a range of animals.

How long does it last?
Between 9-15 months

Where will I learn?
You will be working in an animal care environment, such as a cattery, kennels, pet shop or rescue centre. Your trainer assessor will visit you there and carry out training as required. You may also need to attend our premises in Nottingham as part of the induction programme.

How will I be assessed?
Your trainer assessor will visit you in your workplace and assess your on the job performance. You will build up a portfolio of evidence to prove your knowledge and competence.

What does this lead to?
You may want to become a Kennel/Cattery worker, Pet Shop Assistant, Animal Care Technician or Junior Zoo Keeper or maybe progress onto a higher level qualification.
