Qualification Title: ABC Awards Level 1 in Practical Animal Care Skills.

Is it for me?
If you are between the ages of 16 and 18, want to learn in a small class in a friendly supportive environment
and animal care is your chosen career path, then this is the course for you. This course provides an opportunity
for you to develop skills in caring for animals which can be used as a basis for further training or employment.
What will I do?
You will study towards an ABC Awards Level 1 Award/Certificate in Practical
Animal Care Skills. This course provides an opportunity for you to develop
skills in caring for animals which can be used as a basis for further training
in this area.

- Grooming
- Health Checks
- Giving medication - Routine and Non Routine
- Restraining and Moving Animals
- Facts about Different Species
- Communication and Teamwork
1 day per week will be spent at a Farm Park where you will
gain practical experience working with animals in a busy
visitor centre setting.
Where will I learn?
You will attend classes at our premises in Nottingham, where you will be
allocated a tutor to guide and support you. The practical aspect of your
programme is at a Farm Park. We will provide the transport to the farm from our
Nottingham office.
How often do I need to attend?
You will need to attend 6 sessions a week over 3 for 6 weeks.
Session times;
Nottingham Training Centre
Morning session 9.15am – 12.00pm
Afternoon session 1.00pm – 3.45pm
The day at the farm will be slightly longer. The transport
leaves the Nottingham Office at 9.15 am and leaves the farm park at 4 .00pm.
How long does the course last?
Your training course will be designed to meet your individual needs and will be
delivered in 6 week blocks. You will start on a
minimum of 16 hours per week.
How will I know what progress I am making?
Your learning programme will be agreed with you at interview and then planned in
detail during your first week on the course. Your progress will then be reviewed
with you regularly to ensure you know how you are progressing throughout the
course.
What are my next steps?
After you have successfully completed your learning programme you could either;
- Progress onto another appropriate 6 week course
- Progress on to a Level 2 course at Access Training
- Go to college to further your learning
- Enter employment
What facilities are available at the Training Centres?
- Learner chill out room with gaming console
- A kitchen where you can make a drink or use the
facilities to make a sandwich or heat up food you bring
with you
- Many of our training rooms are fully equipped with smart
screens and up to date ICT facilities to promote active
learning
- You will be able to access full support with your
qualification and ongoing Information Advice and
Guidance (IAG). This includes Progression tutorials.
- All our delivery staff (Tutors) hold, or are working
towards, a Level 4 or Level 5 teaching qualification and
have worked in the vocational area they train in.
- A dedicated Safeguarding Manager who will support you
with ANY issues
- Dyslexia screening which enables us to meet your
learning needs.
Additional Curriculum Activities
- Fund raising for charities (Children in Need and Red
Nose Day)
- Each month we carry out an activity to promote and
explore issues around equality and diversity.
